How to Pick the Right T-Shirt Brand for Your Custom Order (Gildan, Next Level, Bella+Canvas)

The brand of shirt you choose affects how your print looks, how the shirt fits, and how your customers or team members feel wearing it. Here's a practical guide to the most popular options.

When customers place a custom apparel order with us, one of the most common questions is: "Which shirt should I pick?" It's a fair question, because the blank garment is the foundation of the final product. The same design can look and feel completely different depending on whether it's printed on a Gildan 5000, a Bella+Canvas 3001, or a Next Level 3600. This guide breaks down the most popular t-shirt brands, what makes each one distinct, and which situations they're best suited for.

Why the Shirt Brand Matters More Than You Think

Two factors make shirt selection critically important: fit and printability.

Fit determines whether the people wearing your shirts are comfortable and whether the shirts look intentional or just like generic hand-outs. A too-boxy shirt on a team of young adults signals different things than a fitted, fashion-forward cut. Think about who will be wearing the shirts and what impression you want to make.

Printability matters because different fabrics take ink differently. A smooth, tight-knit fabric like Bella+Canvas produces extremely crisp, detailed DTF prints. A heavier, looser cotton weave like Gildan 5000 still prints very well but has a slightly different texture. Polyester performance fabrics are ideal for sublimation but require specific printing methods.

Gildan 5000: The Workhorse

The Gildan 5000 is the most widely used blank t-shirt in the custom apparel industry — and for good reason. It's a 5.3 oz, 100% cotton (or 50/50 blend) shirt built for durability and value. It's available in virtually every size and color you could need, from youth to 5XL, and the price point is the lowest of any mainstream blank on the market.

The cut is classic and boxy — a straight, relaxed fit that works across all body types without being form-fitting. It's not a fashion shirt, and it's not trying to be. The heavier weight means it holds its shape wash after wash, which is exactly what you want for event shirts, workwear, and promotional giveaways that will get hard use.

Best for: giveaway shirts, large community events, contractor workwear, church shirts, school spirit days, promotional orders where volume and value matter most. The Gildan 5000 is a reliable, proven choice for orders of any size. It's also one of the most compatible blanks for DTF printing and screen printing — the cotton surface holds ink well and produces clean, vivid results.

Next Level: Softer, More Fashion-Forward

Next Level shirts — particularly the 3600 and 6010 styles — occupy the middle ground between value blanks and premium fashion shirts. They feature a softer hand feel than Gildan (achieved through ring-spun cotton or cotton/poly blends), a more tailored fit with side seams that follow the body's shape, and a lighter weight that feels more comfortable to wear for extended periods.

The result is a shirt that reads as "nicer" than a standard event tee without jumping into premium pricing territory. Customers notice the difference when they put it on, which makes Next Level popular for merchandise where the recipient's experience matters — merch tables, team shirts, volunteer uniforms where you want people to actually want to wear the shirt.

Best for: branded merchandise, team apparel, nonprofit shirts, events where attendee experience matters, any order where you want a step up from basic without a significant price increase. Prints beautifully with DTF.

Bella+Canvas: Premium Feel, Retail Quality

Bella+Canvas — specifically the 3001 unisex tee — is the preferred blank for brands and businesses that want their custom shirts to look and feel like something you'd find on a boutique retail rack. The fabric is an Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton (or CVC blend) that is notably softer, lighter, and smoother than standard cotton shirts. The fit is more contemporary, with a slightly tapered body and a modern cut.

For DTF printing specifically, Bella+Canvas is excellent — the tight, smooth fabric surface allows for extremely fine detail reproduction, clean edges, and brilliant color saturation. If your logo has fine lines, small text, or detailed artwork, the Bella+Canvas surface will show it at its best.

The tradeoff is cost — Bella+Canvas blanks are priced higher than Gildan or Next Level, which increases per-shirt cost for larger orders. For boutique brands, retail merchandise, and any situation where the shirt itself is part of the brand experience, that premium is well justified.

Best for: branded merchandise for retail sale, creative businesses, bands and artists, boutique events, any order where the shirt is itself a product rather than just a vehicle for a logo.

Comfort Colors: Vintage Character and Premium Softness

Comfort Colors shirts are garment-dyed after construction, which gives them a distinctive worn-in, lived-in look straight out of the bag. The colors are rich and earthy rather than stark — a Comfort Colors "blue" is more of a faded coastal blue than a bright royal. The fabric is exceptionally soft from the first wear, and the slightly irregular dye creates subtle variation that reads as artisanal rather than mass-produced.

These characteristics have made Comfort Colors enormously popular for casual brands, outdoor lifestyle companies, breweries, and events where a premium, bohemian aesthetic is part of the identity. They're heavier than Bella+Canvas (typically 6.1 oz) and have a chunkier, more relaxed cut that suits the vintage aesthetic.

Best for: casual lifestyle brands, breweries and restaurants, outdoor events, festival merchandise, any order where the vintage aesthetic is part of the brand identity. DTF prints beautifully on Comfort Colors cotton.

Sport-Tek and Augusta: Performance and Athletic Wear

For sports teams, athletic events, and performance apparel, brands like Sport-Tek and Augusta step in where cotton t-shirts don't belong. These shirts are typically 100% polyester or high-poly blends with moisture-wicking technology — they pull sweat away from the body and dry quickly, which cotton doesn't do. They're designed to be worn during activity, not just while standing around.

Because of their high polyester content, performance shirts are ideal for sublimation printing, which requires polyester to bond properly. If you're printing sports jerseys, rec league shirts, or athletic event shirts, sublimation on a Sport-Tek or Augusta blank produces stunning results — all-over designs, bold colors, player names and numbers, all in a lightweight shirt that performs on the field.

Best for: youth and adult sports leagues, athletic events, fitness studios, school teams, any situation requiring moisture management during activity. Pair with sublimation printing for best results.
